IN a shocking incident, a founder of a start-up in Bengaluru, India’s information technology capital, has been arrested for allegedly murdering her four-year-old son in the state of Goa. She travelled back to the state of Karnataka by road with her son’s body in a bag before getting caught.

Suchana Seth, CEO of artificial intelligence start-up Mindful AI Lab, was arrested in Chitradurga in Karnataka on Monday (8) with her son’s body. The 39-year-old, whose LinkedIn profile says she is on 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics List and a Fellow at the Berkman Klein Centre at Harvard University, allegedly murdered her minor son in an apartment in north Goa’s Candolim, a popular tourist destination in the coastal state.

According to reports, the motive for the crime was yet to be ascertained by police suspect Seth’s estranged relationship with her husband could be a reason. They said Seth, who hails from the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, was not happy about her ongoing divorce with her husband Venkat Raman.

Seth reportedly checked into an apartment in Candolim with her son on Saturday (6). Her husband, who works as an AI developer, is in Indonesia. On Monday, she checked out of the room alone and asked the hotel staff members to book her a taxi to return to Bengaluru. She turned down their advice to take a flight instead.

The staff members suspected something was wrong as Seth’s son was missing. After she left, they also noticed bloodstains in the apartment that she and her son had occupied.

They soon alerted the Goa Police who called the driver of the taxi in which Seth was travelling with her dead son. The police spoke to Seth over the phone and she told them that her son was with a friend and also gave an address, which turned out to be false.

The police called up the driver once again and they spoke in Konkani so that Seth, an outsider, could not understand their conversation. The driver was asked to take the taxi to the nearest police station in Chitradurga, located about 200 kilometres from Bengaluru. He did as told and Seth was arrested in Chitradurga. Her son’s body was found inside the bag she was carrying. The police also asked Raman to return to India.

Seth was taken back to Goa, located around 360 kilometres away, for questioning.
