Indian road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday (9) said Tesla chief Elon Musk is welcome in India only if his company is ready to manufacture in the country.

Speaking at an event Agenda AajTak in New Delhi, Gadkari said, “Elon Musk is welcome in India. However, it won’t be possible if he is only manufacturing in China and wants a concession for marketing in India.”

He added, “If he manufactures in any Indian state only then he can avail the concession and benefits.”

The 65-year-old minister said the size of India’s automobile industry is around 7.5 lakh crore (7.5 trillion) and he wants to make it the world’s No.1 manufacturing hub.

“This industry is the only industry that pays the maximum amount of GST (goods and services tax) to state government and the Centre (federal government). The Indian automobile industry has given employment to four crore (40 million) people,” Gadkari said.

On the occasion, he also spoke on Mercedes, electric cars, and quality centric cars.
