SM Vaidya, chairman of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), has been ranked as the country’s top chief executive officer (CEO) by the CEOWorld magazine in their annual list of World’s Most Influential CEOs for 2023. Globally, he got an impressive rank of 81 among more than 1,200 CEOs across 96 nations.

Vaidya, who is one of India’s leading energy technocrats with more than 36 years of experience in the downstream petroleum industry, is known for making active contributions to global energy security and sustainability dialogues, India Today reported. He has been the IOC’s chairman since July 2020.

The ranking by CEOWorld recognises Vaidya’s thought leadership, global influence and the impact he has made towards energy discourse around the world.

The parameters over which the IOC chairman was adjudged included the company’s financial returns, environmental track record, social outreaches, governance, market share, among others.

Reacting to the honour, Vaidya said he was humbled and grateful, the India Today report added.

“This is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the collective efforts of the Indian Oil team to march towards an energy-secure greener tomorrow. IndianOil is on a remarkable ascent, and this honour strengthens our resolve to achieve greater heights,” he was quoted as saying.

Vaidya had also led the company into a fresh era of environmental sensitivity through a green agenda which gained appreciation when he announced Indian Oil’s aim of achieving Net Zero Operational emissions by the year 2046.
