A 21-YEAR-OLD Indian nursing student named Jasmeen Kaur, whose body was discovered in Adelaide, Australia, was stalked, abducted and murdered by Tarikjot Singh in March 2021, The Australia Today reported.
It has been revealed before a court that Kaur was bound by cable ties and buried alive in Flinders Ranges in South Australia.
Prosecutors on Wednesday (5) said the killing was an “act of vengeance” and the violence involved an “uncommon level of cruelty”, according to Australia’s 9News.
“She had to have been consciously suffering what could only be described as the absolute terror of breathing in and swallowing soil and dying in that way,” prosecutor Carmen Matteo was quoted as saying by the news outlet.
Singh allegedly buried Kaur alive in a shallow grave more than 400 kilometres from where she was last spotted leaving for work in Adelaide. The former initially denied the killing and said his former partner had taken her own life but later pleaded guilty to murder before he was due to appear for a trial earlier this year, the 9News report added.
He kidnapped her from her workplace and put her either in the back or boot of a car that he drove for hours.
The 9News report also said that Singh was seen on CCTV hours before the killing at a store buying gloves, cable ties and a shovel. The court heard that he had planned Kaur’s murder because he could not overcome the grief after breaking up with her, the report added.
Kaur worked as an aged care worker while studying nursing and lived with her aunt and uncle in Adelaide, The Australia Today said.
The family of the victim, including her mother, was in court to hear the sentencing submissions.
While Singh was told that he will be jailed for life, his lawyer urged for a more merciful sentence, partly because they called it a “crime of passion”.
The decision will be delivered in August.
