AN INDIAN national, who murdered his teenage wife at their home at Ash Tree Way at Croydon last year and called 999 to inform the police about his act, has been sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 15 years before being considered for parole.

Sahil Sharma, 24, was arrested at the scene in south London in October on suspicion of the killing of his wife Mehak Sharma, 19, who was found unresponsive with serious stab injuries and succumbed to her injuries later.

The Metropolitan Police said Sahil was given the life sentence by Kingston Crown Court on April 26 after he pleaded guilty to the murder of Mehak at the same court in February.

“This is a tragic case that has completely devastated a family. In killing his wife, Sharma has robbed her family of a loving daughter for reasons known only to himself,” said detective inspector Laura Semple from the Met Police’s Specialist Crime Command.

She said while nothing could bring Mehak to her beloved ones, the sentencing would bring them some closure.

The court was told how Mehak was found unresponsive at the site. She had suffered catastrophic knife wounds to her neck and could not be revived despite the medics’ efforts and was pronounced dead around 20 minutes later.

A post-mortem examination was conducted on October 31 and found a stab would to the neck to be the cause of Mehak’s death.

“Mehak was killed in her own home, a place where she should have felt the safest, and by the person who should have loved and protected her. My thoughts remain with her family and loved ones,” added DI Semple.

Sahil was arrested at the scene and taken to a hospital since he suffered a minor head injury.

The incident has shattered the family of Mehak Sharma, who the Met Police said had arrived in the UK ‘relatively recently’.

A victim impact statement was read out to the court from the victim’s mother who said she feels broken after her daughter’s brutal murder.

“The one thing I want more than anything is to have my daughter back but this is impossible. No amount of prayers, money or support will bring her back to me. I am broken. Sahil hasn’t just murdered Mehak, I feel he has killed me as well,” read her statement.
