Indian finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who was admitted to Delhi’s premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Monday (26) with symptoms of viral fever, is reportedly recovering well and is likely to be discharged on Wednesday (28), government sources said.

Sitharaman’s recovery is “on track”, an informed source said.

The finance ministry, however, was yet to officially share an update on the minister’s health.

The 63-year-old Sitharaman, who has been serving as the finance minister of the Narendra Modi government since 2019, is India’s first full-fledged woman finance minister.

On February 1, she is set to table the government’s budget for the 2023-24 fiscal before the parliament — the final full-fledged one before India goes to its next general elections.

Prior to her admission to the hospital, Sitharaman had paid homage to former Indian prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on Sunday (25) on the occasion of his birth anniversary.

On Saturday (24), she took part in the annual convocation ceremony at Dr MGR Medical University in Chennai in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
