A VISIT to Canada turned traumatic for an Indian family as three of its members, including an elderly couple and their infant grandchild were killed in a multi-vehicle collision in Ontario.

The fatal incident happened earlier this week when the local police were led the wrong way while chasing a man who was allegedly involved in a liquor robbery.

Four persons, including the family members, were announced dead on the spot following the accident on Highway 401, Whitby, around 50 kilometres east of Toronto, police informed on Thursday (2).

The deceased included a 60-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, who came from India, and their three-month-old grandson, Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said. It, however, was yet to release the names of the deceased.

The fourth deceased was the 21-year-old man whom the police was chasing, CBC News reported. At least six vehicles were involved in the accident.

Officials have said the deadly chase started with a liquor store robbery in Bowmanville and ended around 20 minutes later after the suspect in a cargo van led Durham police on a high-speed chase against opposing traffic on Highway 401.

A 38-year-old male passenger from the cargo van was also taken to the hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

The autopsies of the deceased were conducted in Toronto on Wednesday (1), the SIU said.

Seven investigators, one forensic investigator and one collision reconstructionist continue to investigate this case, the agency said.

The SIU is called in to probe whenever police are involved in a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual crime.

Milica Maljkovic Birkett, a witness to the deadly police chase who had a lucky escape, told CBC Toronto on Thursday (2) that the experience was very scary and expressed grief over the deaths.

A video of the incident was posted on X and many users blamed the police for chasing the suspect on the wrong side of a busy highway.
