A ‘plastic cafe’ has been set up in front of the Dahod tehsil panchayat in Dahod district, Gujarat, to provide free snacks and tea in exchange for plastic waste.
This is the first such cafe in the state of Gujarat.
The ‘plastic cafe’ has been set up as part of the Indian government’s cleanliness programme ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’, reports said.
On social media, the novel initiative got huge fans and many praised it as a “great initiative”.
“It was set up two days ago to make the tribal-dominated Dahod district plastic-free. As per the scheme, those who bring in one kilogram of plastic waste will get snacks while those bringing in half that quantity will get tea,” an official told PTI.
These snacks are being prepared by women under the Gujarat government’s ‘Sakhi Mandal’ scheme, the official said.
As per reports, the cafe was collecting a sizable amount of plastic waste since it started, which is then sent for recycling.
If found successful, the initiative will be expanded to other areas in the district, officials said.
