AUSTRALIA captain Mitchell Marsh heaped praise on Tanveer Sangha, the Indian-origin spinner, who made a brilliant debut in international cricket last month by taking four wickets against South Africa in a T20 match in Durban.

Australia, who bagged the series 3-0, won that game by 111 runs and it was South Africa’s heaviest defeat in a T20 in terms of runs.

The 21-year-old Sangha’s bowling figures of 4-31 was the best for a player making debut for Australia in 18 years. He ran through the middle order of the Proteas batting to help his team skittle the hosts out for 115 while chasing 227 in 20 overs.

After the game, Marsh, who was adjudged the man of the match for belting an unbeaten 92 off just 49 balls, lauded the youngster and particularly his composure.

“I don’t think Tanveer’s heart rate gets over 100,” Marsh was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au. He also called Sangha a “ripping young kid”.

“He was in the gym when he found out about playing in the game as a debutant and he was pretty chilled and said he’s ready to go, it appears that he keeps it very simple, which will hold him in good stead for top-level cricket.

“His demeanour is fantastic. I’m proud of him to come in and have a debut like that. He’s got a great smile, so hopefully we see it for many years to come,” the Australia captain said.

Sangha also played the third match in which he took one wicket.

The bowler, whose father hails from a village near Jalandhar in the northern Indian state of Punjab and drives a taxi in Sydney after migrating to Australia in the 1990s, was given full support by his family to nurture his passion for the game. The promising talent caught attention during the U-19 World Cup in South Africa in 2020 where he picked 15 wickets in just six games.

As Sangha continued to emerge more as a player, he was picked for Australia’s 18-member squad for the upcoming 50-over world cup in India even before making his international debut.

Sangha will now look forward to making an equally impressive mark in the upcoming five-match one-day international series against South Africa to strengthen his claim for a berth in the final world cup squad.
