AN officer of the Indian Army was killed while three others were injured in a fire incident that occurred at the Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest battlefield situated in the north of Kashmir where India and Pakistan maintain steady military presence, in the early hours of Wednesday (19).

The injured soldiers were taken to a hospital where they are undergoing treatment. The deceased officer was identified as Captain Anshuman Singh, a regimental medical officer who suffered serious burn injuries, an official said.

Condolences poured in over Singh’s death, including from veteran politician and former chief minister of the northern state of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh.

“In a fire accident in the Siachen glacier today, one officer lost his life while three soldiers were injured. The injured have been safely evacuated from there to hospital. The incident took place around 3.30 AM,” the army said in a statement.

Deaths of soldiers in extreme climatic conditions in Siachen are not uncommon. One report said that more than 800 personnel have died in the region in extreme climate, hostile terrain and enemy firing in the last 37 years.

Yogi Adityanath, chief minister of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, on Thursday (20) paid tribute to Singh and announced a financial assistance of Rs 50 lakh (£47,265) to the next of kin of the officer and a government job to a member of the aggrieved family.

Singh hailed from the state’s Deoria district and according to Adityanath, the district will be named after him.
