INDIAN-AMERICANS in Washington are gearing up for a grand cultural event to welcome Indian prime minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the American capital next week. This extravaganza follows his participation in a yoga session at the UN headquarters in New York on June 21, the ninth International Day of Yoga.

The prime minister’s visit to the US spans from June 21 to 24, upon the invitation of president Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden. A state dinner hosted by the Bidens will take place on June 22, and Modi will also address a joint session of the US congress on the same day. On June 23, he will speak at an exclusive gathering of diaspora leaders at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington.

Over 160 artistes have been rehearsing for the past week to present 25 cultural programmes, representing the diverse cultures of 15 Indian states. The performances, including dances, songs, and musicals, will showcase India’s rich cultural heritage. The venue for these events is the historic Freedom Plaza near the White House, in front of the Willard Hotel. The cultural programs will begin at 10 am and continue until 2 pm, coinciding with the prime minister’s arrival.

A significant number of Indian Americans are expected to gather at the Freedom Plaza to extend a warm welcome to Prime Minister Modi. They plan to chant “Vande Mataram,” a patriotic song, and wave the Indian tricolor flag as a show of their enthusiasm and support.

Engaging with the Indian diaspora has been a prominent aspect of Modi’s international visits. The prime minister often spends time interacting with his diaspora followers, taking selfies, and fostering connections with the Indian community residing abroad.

This cultural extravaganza serves as an opportunity for Indian-Americans to celebrate their heritage and express their pride in India’s diverse traditions. It also signifies the strong bond between the Indian diaspora and the homeland, as they come together to welcome and honour their prime minister on his visit to the US.
