An IndiGo flight going from Delhi to Doha, the capital of Qatar, was diverted to Karachi in Pakistan on Sunday (12) night after a passenger fell ill onboard and was declared dead on arrival later, according to officials.

The deceased, identified as Abdullah, was a 60-year-old Nigerian national, official sources said.

They added that the aircraft A320-271N, which was parked at the Pakistani city airport for almost five hours, returned to the Indian capital after the authorities there issued a death certificate for the ill-fated passenger and other formalities were completed.

On Monday (13), an IndiGo spokesperson said the flight 6E-1736, operating from Delhi to Doha, was diverted to Karachi due to a medical emergency on board.

“Unfortunately, on arrival, the passenger was declared dead by the airport medical team,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Officials of Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority in Karachi said the passenger fell ill onboard and the captain requested for an emergency landing at the city’s Jinnah International Airport.

Doctors from the health department were sent to provide treatment but the passenger had passed away.

“We are deeply saddened by the news and our prayers and wishes are with his family and loved ones,” the airline spokesperson said. The total number of people onboard the aircraft could not be immediately ascertained.
