IRAN’S supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Thursday (5) urged India to “confront extremist Hindus” and “stop the massacre of Muslims”, referring to the recent Delhi riots.

“The hearts of Muslims all over the world are grieving over the massacre of Muslims in India. The govt of India should confront extremist Hindus & their parties & stop the massacre of Muslims in order to prevent India’s isolation from the world of Islam,” Khamenei tweeted with the hashtag #IndianMuslimslnDanger.

His remarks came just days after New Delhi rebuked Iran’s foreign minister for commenting on the same issue.

“Iran condemns the wave of organized violence against Indian Muslims,” Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted on Monday (2), in response to which New Delhi summoned the Islamic republic’s ambassador and lodged a protest.

Khameini’s tweet was third Iranian barb aimed at the Modi government’s handling of the Delhi riots.

The Indian government was at the receiving end criticism from global power centres, including the British parliament.

Earlier this week, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights had approached the Supreme Court of India on the concerns stirred by the country’s new citizenship law.

India, however, maintained that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act was an “internal matter”, adding that adverse comments were unhelpful at a time when the government was striving to ensure peace and harmony.
