INDIA’S ambassador to the UN, P Harish, on Thursday (24) urged the world community to publicly condemn the recent dastardly terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Kashmir.
There can be no justification for such barbaric acts that led to the death of 26 people, mostly tourists, at a picturesque meadow in Baisaran near Pahalgam, on Tuesday (22), he added.
Harish also thanked “India’s friends and partners who expressed condolences, stood in solidarity with us at this difficult hour”.
“The UN and the world must publicly condemn such terrorism perpetrated against civilians and tourists,” he added.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres had earlier strongly condemned the Pahalgam terrorist attack and stressed that attacks against civilians are unacceptable under any circumstances.
“The Secretary-General strongly condemns the armed attack in Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April, in which at least 26 people were killed,” Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General, said.
Guterres offered his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the victims.
French President Emmanuel Macron, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Thursday dialled prime minister Narendra Modi and conveyed their solidarity with India.
The bodies of the victims are being flown from Srinagar to various parts of India for their last rites.
The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Indian investigating agencies claim that four terrorists lined up the tourists before firing at them from a point-blank range, while at least one to three terrorists were keeping a watch for any approaching security forces.
The terrorists were carrying body cameras to record their barbaric act, the officials said, quoting eyewitnesses.
