ISRAEL and India are gearing up to resume talks on a free trade agreement, Israel’s economy ministry on Monday said, adding that an Indian delegation was in Jerusalem to discuss framework rules and coordinate expectations for talks.
Last October, the two nations agreed to resume free trade talks with an aim of signing a deal by the middle of 2022, Reuters reported.
The Israeli ministry said a senior team from India’s would meet Israeli officials to discuss the ground rules but did not say when the actual trade negotiations would start again.
Ties between Israel and India have grown closer in the eight years since Narendra Modi became the Indian prime minister, and the two countries have set up a number of strategic, military, and technology partnerships in this time.
Bilateral trade between Israel and India reached $6.3 billion last year up from $200 million in 1992 when the two countries opened diplomatic relations. Israel has gradually emerged as one of India’s biggest suppliers of weapons alongside the US and Russia.
