THE Election Commission of India on Wednesday (29) announced that elections, if needed, to choose the next vice president of India will be held on August 6.
It said that the counting of votes will also take place on the same day.
The last date for nominations for the vice presidential election is July 17, the commission added, a day before the presidential election is held.
The vice president of India is elected by members of an electoral college consisting of members of both houses of the Indian parliament.
The announcement from the election commission came as the term of the incumbent vice president, M Venkaiah Naidu, concludes on August 10.
“As per Article 68 of the Constitution of India, an election to fill the vacancy caused by the expiration of the term of office of the outgoing vice-president is required to be completed before the expiration of the term,” the commission said.
In 2017, Naidu, a former central minister of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, defeated Gopal Krishna Gandhi by a wide margin to become the 13th vice president.
