The Narendra Modi government is working on bringing more than 640 products under the purview of mandatory quality control orders to ensure compliance with quality standards, the Hindu BusinessLine reported.

It added that the Bureau of Indian Standards is in the middle of finalising and developing standards for emerging sectors such as drones, electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, including swapping of batteries.

India’s commerce and trade minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday (3) told mediapersons in New Delhi that as part of the government’s focus to develop a robust quality ecosystem, a total of 115 quality control orders (QCDs) have been notified by various ministries covering 493 products.

The report said that till May 2014, only 14 QCDs covering 106 products had been notified for compulsory BIS notification and implementation of Indian Standards.

After May 2014 when the Modi government took over, more 101 QCDs covering 387 products have been notified by a number of ministries.

Till now, 643 products are under consideration by 14 ministries or departments to be brought under the purview of the QCDs, the report said citing officials.

Goyal stressed that quality is an important pillar to make India self-reliant and said that a strong quality ecosystem will increase exports, bring economies of scale, generate employment, boost the GDP and help make a competitive India.
