INDIA on Wednesday (1) morning successfully flight-tested an indigenously developed supersonic missile-assisted release of torpedo (SMART) system from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast in the eastern state of Odisha.

The system will enhance the anti-submarine warfare capability of the Indian Navy beyond the conventional range of lightweight torpedo, the defence ministry said in a release.

“SMART is a next-generation missile-based light-weight torpedo delivery system, designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to enhance the anti-submarine warfare capability of the Indian Navy far beyond the conventional range of lightweight torpedo.” it said.

The ministry also said that the canister-based missile system consists of several advanced sub-systems, namely two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuator system, precision inertial navigation system, and others.

The system is capable of carrying an advanced light-weight torpedo as payload along with a parachute-based release system.

Several state-of-the-art mechanisms such as symmetric separation, ejection and velocity control were validated during the test.

Indian defence minister Rajnath Singh lauded the DRDO and the industry partners on the SMART’s successful flight-test.

“The development of the system will further enhance the strength of our Navy,” he said.

DRDO chairman Samir V Kamat praised the synergistic efforts of the entire SMART team over the successful test.
