INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi on Monday (11) welcomed the ruling that the country’s top court gave on the abrogation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, calling it a “resounding declaration of hope, progress, and unity” for the people of the Union Territories (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
In a post on X soon after the verdict came, he also told people of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir that his government is committed to fulfilling their aspirations. Modi’s government revoked Article 370 in August 2019, ending the former state’s special status converting it into a UT directly ruled from New Delhi. The move earned a backlash both from the region’s local opposition and neighbouring Pakistan that also claims Kashmir to be their own.

“Today’s Supreme Court verdict on the abrogation of Article 370 is historic and constitutionally upholds the decision taken by the Parliament of India on August 5, 2019,” Modi said on the social media platform.
“It is a resounding declaration of hope, progress and unity for our sisters and brothers in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. The court, in its profound wisdom, has fortified the very essence of unity that we, as Indians, hold dear…” he added.

“I want to assure the resilient people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh our commitment to fulfilling your dreams remains unwavering. We are determined to ensure the fruits of progress not only reach you but also extend their benefits to vulnerable and marginalised sections who suffered due to Article 370.”
“The verdict today is not just a legal judgment; it is a beacon of hope, a promise of a brighter future and a testament to our collective resolve to build a stronger, more united India,” he concluded.
Indian home minister Amit Shah, the second most powerful leader in the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party after Modi who spearheaded the move on Article 370 in the parliament, also expressed satisfaction over the top court’s ruling. He also hailed the ‘leadership’ of Modi, saying their government is committed to establishing lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Indian forces face challenges from the Pakistani and Chinese forces from the western and eastern parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, respectively, triggering unrest in the region.
“After abrogation of Article 370, rights of poor and deprived have been restored and separatism and stone-pelting are now things of the past. The entire region now echoes with melodious music and cultural tourism… bonds of unity have strengthened… integrity with Bharat stands reinforced,” Shah said on X.
“It is once again the Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh that always belonged to our nation and will continue to be so,” he added.
“Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modiji, our government is committed to establishing lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, and the all-around development of the region. Whether it is boosting local economy with new incentives, building state-of-the-art educational infrastructure, or empowering poor with welfare benefits, we will continue to exert all our might for the region.
Earlier in the day, a five-member constitution bench of the top court upheld the Modi government’s move to scrap Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 saying the article was a “temporary” provision to ease the former state’s merger with India in 1947, the year the country got its Independence, and did not retain its sovereignty after accession.
The court also directed for elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September end next year.
