INDIA has taken strong action in response to the recent attacks on the Sikh community in Pakistan. On Monday, a senior diplomat of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi was summoned by India, urging Pakistani authorities to conduct a sincere investigation into the incidents and share the report. India emphasised the need for its western neighbour to ensure the safety and security of its minority communities, who face constant fear of religious persecution.

Series of incidents against the Sikh community in Pakistan in the last three months have been a cause for concern. One such incident occurred on Saturday (24) when unidentified armed men shot and killed a man named Manmohan Singh in the Kakshal locality of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan’s The News International reported. He was traveling in an auto-rickshaw when the assailants opened fire on him near Guldara. Despite being taken to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

In another incident on Friday (23), Tarlug Singh was shot and injured in the Dabgari area of Peshawar. His condition was reported to be out of danger after receiving medical treatment. Additionally, in May, 63-year-old Sardar Singh was killed in a drive-by shooting in Lahore, while in April, Dayal Singh was shot and killed in Peshawar. These incidents highlight the increasing targeting killings against the Sikh community in Pakistan.

The alleged failure of the Pakistani government to protect minority communities, including Sikhs, has left them feeling insecure. The lack of action against the perpetrators of these attacks has only emboldened them to act with impunity. India’s protest and demand for a sincere investigation into the matter reflect the seriousness with which it views the safety and well-being of the Sikh community members in Pakistan.
