Indian defence forces are keeping a close watch on the situation in neighbouring Pakistan where massive violence erupted following the dramatic arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan in relation to a corruption case outside the high court in Islamabad on Tuesday (9).
Confirming the news, India’s defence sources also said that a strong vigil was being maintained by the army along the Line of Control and International Border with Pakistan.
Speaking to Asian News International, the defence sources said, “Defence forces keeping a close watch on the situation in Pakistan, in view of the developments there. Strong vigil being maintained by the forces along the Line of Control and the international border.”
More than 1,000 people have been arrested from across Pakistan after supporters of Khan and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) staged protests. More than 125 officers and officials were injured in the violence, according to an official statement.
It is said that the Indian side is concerned that the Pakistan Army, which has faced the wrath of Khan’s supporters, might try to open a new front along the LoC to blame India and other external forces to relieve the pressure at home, the sources added.
Pakistani troops had not reduced any numbers from forward locations with India till Tuesday (9) evening, the sources added.
PTI supporters stormed a number of army establishments, including its general headquarters in Rawalpindi, to protest the arrest of Khan who was surrounded by Pakistan Rangers personnel outside the court and whisked away in an armoured vehicle.
Pakistan’s anti-corruption watchdog on Wednesday (10) sought a 14-day physical remand of Khan as he was produced before a special court inside a high security police facility in Islamabad for the hearing in the case in which he has been arrested.
