Here are news in brief related to Indian politics for Wednesday, September 7, 2022:

Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said India’s National Flag is “under attack” from the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) and the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) who see it as their “personal property”, as he accused them of dividing India on the lines of religion and language. Speaking at the launch of the Congress’s 3,570-kilometre-long ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ at a sea side rally venue in Kanyakumari in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, he said every single institution of the country is under attack with the BJP and the RSS looking to frighten the opposition by using the Enforcement Directorate, the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Income Tax Department. “The problem is that they do not understand the Indian people. Indian people do not get scared. Does not matter how many hours of interrogation they do, does not matter. Not a single Opposition leader is going to be scared of the BJP,” he said.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday released its third list of 10 candidates for the Gujarat assembly elections due later this year. The Arvind Kejriwal-led party had earlier announced 19 candidates for polls to the 182-member Assembly in BJP-ruled Gujarat. No other party has so far declared its candidates for the state elections due in December. During his recent visits to Gujarat, AAP national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal announced a host of pre-poll guarantees related to electricity, jobs, unemployment allowance, women and tribals if the AAP is elected to power in the state.

Indian defence minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at his statue in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar. Singh’s three-day visit to Mongolia, which concluded the same day, is the first-ever tour to the east Asian country by an Indian defence minister. “Paid tributes to Poojya Bapu in Ulaanbaatar,” Singh tweeted later, sharing a photograph. On Tuesday, Singh held bilateral talks with his Mongolian counterpart Lt Gen Saikhanbayar Gursed and also called on president Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh and chairman of State Great Khural (Parliament) G Zandanshatar.

Several registered unrecognised political parties (RUPP) across India were raided by income tax officials for allegedly duping the national exchequer of millions of tax money. A coordinated action was launched by the department against certain RUPPs, their promoters and linked entities to investigate the source of their income and expenditure, Press Trust of India reported, quoting sources. Raids are underway at more than 100 premises across India — in states such as Gujarat, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Haryana, among others. The Election Commission of India on May said it had initiated graded action against more than 2,100 RUPPs for allegedly violating rules, including those related to filing of contribution reports and engaging in financial impropriety.
