Indian National Congress MP and a candidate for the party’s presidential election Shashi Tharoor on Thursday said that he is very happy to have the support of young people in the party and urged everyone to join him in making a “rejuvenated Congress”, to lead young India, Asian News International reported. “I am very happy to have the support of young people in the party…I am not turning away any support be it young or old. We need everyone to join us in this adventure of making a rejuvenated Congress to lead young India,” said the Congress leader. Tharoor is currently campaigning for the upcoming presidential polls of the party in which he is up against the veteran leader Mallikarjun Kharge.
Bharatiya Janata Party MP Pragya Singh Thakur, a prime accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, on Thursday appeared before the trial court in Mumbai, PTI reported. The Bhopal MP remained present before the special judge for NIA cases, A K Lahoti, as an official of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad who had arrested her was deposing as a witness. The ATS official was cross-examined by Thakur’s lawyer during the day’s proceedings. She arrived around 12 PM and sat on the wooden bench assigned for the accused. Later, the court allowed her to sit on a chair after she complained of backache. The court also conducted the proceedings in Hindi (instead of Marathi and English) on Thakur’s request.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday released its fourth list of 12 candidates for the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections, giving tickets to people from a cross-section of society, including teachers, businesspersons and tribals, PTI reported. The Arvind Kejriwal-led party had earlier announced 29 candidates for the year-end Assembly polls in the BJP-ruled state. With the latest list, the Delhi-headquartered party, which seeks to contest on all the 182 Assembly seats in Gujarat, has so far announced 41 candidates. Among the candidates in the latest list are teachers, businessmen and social workers, Gujarat AAP president Gopal Italia said.
Karnataka Congress chief D K Shivakumar on Thursday said the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has turned down his plea for exemption from appearance before the agency in Delhi on Friday (7) in the National Herald money-laundering case, PTI reported. He said he will decide whether to appear before the agency after talking to his party leaders. In a fresh message to Shivakumar, the ED asked him to make himself available before the agency on Friday.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Thursday issued notice to Indian National Congress leader Udit Raj for his allegedly inappropriate and objectionable comments for Indian president Droupadi Murmu and asked him to appear before it in person on October 10, ANI reported. The commission took cognizance of the matter stating that the comments made are extremely condemnable and shameful. “The NCW has come across a Twitter post by former MP and Congress leader Udit Raj wherein he has used inappropriate and objectionable comments for president Droupadi Murmu,” the NCW statement read. Raj had accused Murmu of allegedly doing ‘chamchagiri’ (bootlicking) while making controversial remarks about her on Wednesday (5).
The BJP top brass including national president JP Nadda and Indian home minister Amit Shah will be on a two-day visit to Assam starting Friday (7) and will inaugurate the biggest office of the party in the northeastern region, ANI reported. According to Assam state BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, the top leaders of the party will inaugurate the newly constructed Assam State BJP office at Basistha area in Guwahati on Saturday (8). Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, central minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and state party leaders will be present on the occasion.
