Indian opposition parliamentarian Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Friday tendered an apology to the country’s president, Droupadi Murmu, over his controversial “Rashtrapatni” remark made on Thursday (28). “I am writing to express my regret for having mistakenly used an incorrect word to describe the position you hold. I assure you that it was a slip of tongue. I apologise and request you to accept the same,” read a letter written by Chowdhury, who came under massive criticism from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly dishonouring the head of state.
The Delhi High Court on Friday issued summons to Indian National Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh, Pawan Khera and Netta D’souza in a civil suit filed by cabinet minister Smriti Irani over the allegations against the latter’s daughter over running an illegal bar in the state of Goa. The court also directed the Congress leaders to remove posts, videos, tweets, retweets, and morphed pictures of the plaintiff and her daughter within 24 hours. Partha Chatterjee, the tainted and sacked minister of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, on Friday said that he is being framed in a conspiracy, a day after he was stripped of his portfolios and his positions in his party, the Trinamool Congress, by chief minister Mamata Banerjee. Chatterjee was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with an alleged teacher recruitment scam in which the probe agency unearthed millions of raw cash from the residence of one of his women aides.
Uddhav Thackeray, the former chief minister of the western Indian state of Maharashtra, received another jolt on Friday when his nephew Nihar Thackeray met chief minister Eknath Shinde and pledged support to him. According to political observers, this gave a major boost to the Shinde camp which has been claiming the legacy of party founder and Uddhav’s father Bal Thackeray and approached the Election Commission of India seeking recognition as the real Shiv Sena.
The political ambience in the southern Indian state of Karnataka heated up with yet another murder in the state’s coastal district of Dakshina Kannada. A 23-year-old youth named Fazil Mangalpet was hacked to death by an unidentified group on the outskirts of the coastal city of Mangaluru, the police said on Thursday (28). Following the incident, Section 144 was imposed at Surathkal, Mulki, Bajpe and Panambur. This is the third murder in the state in July and the string of deaths has put pressure on the BJP government to act.
