Maharashtra cabinet expansion is likely to take place at 11 am local time on Tuesday at Maharashtra Raj Bhavan, sources said on Monday. Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde is expected to expand his cabinet this week by inducting at least 15 Ministers and deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis is expected to keep the crucial home portfolio, sources said. Notably, both the Ministers have been functioning as a two-member cabinet, inviting criticism from Opposition leaders, including NCP leader and former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar. “Ajit Pawar is the leader of the opposition. He will have to say such things. Ajit dada conveniently forgets that when he was in the government, there were just five ministers for the first 32 days,” Fadnavis said to reporters on Sunday (7).
Shiv Sena parliamentarian Sanjay Raut was on Monday sent to judicial custody till August 22 in a money-laundering case. The 60-year-old Sena leader was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) about a week ago in the Patra Chawl land scam case. The central probe agency had said that he had ignored probe summons twice before that. According to India Today, the ED on Monday also demanded that Raut be sent to judicial custody since he is a “very influential person against whom allegations of threatening witnesses have surfaced” and who “may tamper with evidence”.
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday sought a report from the state home department in connection with the assault case involving a self-proclaimed Bharatiya Janata Party leader. The chief minister has sought a detailed investigation into the case and strong action against the accused, Shrikant Tyagi, who is currently at large. Meanwhile, six police officers were suspended on charges of laxity in connection with the case.
From farmers’ plight to GST revenue, chief Ministers of States raised several issues in the 7th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and held in the national capital on Sunday. Assam Chief Minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma discussed the modernization of the agriculture sector while attending the Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog in Delhi. He said the meeting mainly concentrated on the reduction of imports and finding more ways to produce paddy, millet, oil, pulses and others.
A Samajwadi Party (SP) leader had a close shave on Sunday when a truck hit his car and dragged it for around 500 metres in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri. The incident took place near Bhadawar House in Mainpuri Sadar Kotwali area on Sunday night when SP district president Devendra Singh Yadav was on his way to his residence via Karhal Road. He was alone in the car during the incident. Following the incident, Yadav lodged a complaint at Mainpuri Sadar Kotwali police station. Police registered a case and have arrested the truck driver.
