Prime minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tributes to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 78th birth anniversary. India’s youngest prime minister, Gandhi held office during 1984-89, the last time the Congress had a majority in Lok Sabha. He was assassinated by a LTTE suicide bomber in 1991. Modi tweeted, “On his birth anniversary, tributes to our former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi.”

The Indian National Congress paid rich tributes to former prime minister and party leader Rajiv Gandhi on his 78th birth anniversary, saying his single term as PM will be remembered for far-reaching achievements, including deepening the foundations of the IT revolution that has transformed India. Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited their father’s memorial, Veer Bhumi, and paid homage on his 78th birth anniversary in the morning. “Papa, you are always with me, in my heart. I will always try to fulfil the dream that you saw for the country,” former Congress president Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi. He also shared a video and picture montage of his late father. In a Facebook post in Hindi, senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi said, “My father Shri Rajiv Gandhi had laid the road map for 21st century India before the country. An India in which the power of the youth, the power of villages, the potential of women, the use of new technologies, finds expression.”

Delhi Congress leaders and workers on Saturday (20) staged a protest outside the Aam Admi Party office in New Delhi demanding the resignation of the state’s deputy chief minister, Manish Sisodia, in connection with the alleged corruption in the implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy. The protesters marched from the Delhi Congress office at DDU Marg towards AAP headquarters raising slogans against chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and Sisodia. Delhi Congress demanded that Kejriwal should remove Sisodia from his cabinet as he is named in a first information report (FIR) registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the excise policy “scam”, said Delhi Congress media department vice chairman Parvez Alam. Sisodia’s residence was searched by the CBI for several hours in connection with the alleged irregularities in execution of Excise Policy 2021-22 on Friday (19). He has been named among 15 persons in an FIR registered by the probe agency.

Indian defence minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday pitched for ensuring timely delivery of justice to armed forces personnel under the framework of military tribunals, but at the same time cautioned against the challenge of ‘justice hurried is justice buried’, Press Trust of India reported. “We often talk of ‘justice delayed is justice denied’. We should try to ensure timely justice delivery to our charter by developing a systematic procedure,” Singh said at a seminar on the armed forces tribunals. “However, we also need to be very careful while doing this. Otherwise, there is also a danger of ‘justice hurried is justice buried. In such a situation, keeping a balance between time and procedure is an important demand of today’s time,” he added.

India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday sharpened its attack on Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, with central minister Anurag Thakur describing him as the “kingpin” of the “liquor scam” in the capital. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Thakur said the AAP should not try to divert attention from the excise scam by raising other issues as its “real face has been unmasked”.  Also taking a dig at deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, Thakur referred to him as “Money Shh”, alleging that he makes money and maintains silence.

Reports of over 25 lakh additional voters in the northern union territory of Jammu and Kashmir is a “misrepresentation of facts by vested interests”, its administration said on Saturday. It said that the revision of electoral rolls will cover existing residents of Jammu and Kashmir, PTI reported. In an advertisement published in local dailies by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, the administration said the summary revision of electoral rolls is undertaken by the Election Commission from time to time according to the laid down process.
