Prime minister Narendra Modi on Monday greeted people on the formation day of Maharashtra and Gujarat. He tweeted, “Best wishes on Maharashtra Day. The state is blessed with a great culture and hardworking people who have enriched national progress across different sectors. I pray for the continued progress of Maharashtra in the years to come.” In another tweet, he said, “Greetings on Gujarat Sthapana Diwas. Gujarat has made a mark due to its all-round progress as well as its unique culture. I pray that the state continues to scale new heights of development in the times ahead.” Both states were formed on this day in 1960 following the bifurcation of the erstwhile state of Bombay on linguistic grounds. Two more bodies were recovered on Monday from the debris of a two-storey building which collapsed in Bhiwandi town in Thane district of the western state of Maharashtra, raising the death toll to eight, officials said. The work of clearing the debris was underway for the third day, they said. The building, which housed godowns on the ground and first floors and four families on the top floor, collapsed at 1.45 pm on Saturday at Wardhaman Compound in Valpada of Mankoli area. Till Sunday, six bodies were found from the debris. (PTI)
India on Monday reported 4,282 coronavirus infections, while the number of active cases dropped by over 1,750 to stand at 47,246, according to the latest Health Ministry data. The death toll has increased to 5,31,547 with 14 more fatalities, which includes six reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am showed. On Sunday, India had reported 5,874 coronavirus cases, while the number of active cases was 49,015. (PTI)
India’s chief of air staff, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari on Monday embarked on a four-day visit to Sri Lanka to explore ways to boost bilateral defence ties amid concerns in India over China’s attempts to expand its influence over the island nation. Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari is scheduled to meet with the top political and military leadership of the country. The defence ministry said the IAF chief is scheduled to meet the Sri Lankan president and the prime minister, state minister of defence, chief of the defence staff, defence secretary and the commanders of the country’s air force, army and navy.
