THE latest ranking published by Henley Passport Index (HPI) has put India’s passport at the 80th spot, moving up by seven places from its position last year.

According to the index released on Tuesday (18), Indians now can travel to 57 destinations without a visa. The South Asian nation’s latest rank is tied with the African nations of Togo and Senegal.

Indian passport holders have visa-free access and visa-on-arrival facilities in countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Jamaica, Rwanda and Sri Lanka, they still need a visa to enter 177 countries, including the US, European Union nations, China, Japan and Russia.

Singapore, on the other hand, emerged at the top of the list with the world’s most powerful passport, allowing visa-free entry to 192 destinations globally.

It replaced another Asian country Japan, which slipped to the third spot after remaining at the top for five years. The US, which dominated the list nearly a decade ago, slumped by two places to reach the eighth position. The UK came up by two places to the fourth position, a position it had last held six years ago.

Afghanistan languished at the bottom of the list with easy access to 27 destinations.

The HPI is based on data provided by the International Air Transport Authority and covers 199 passports and nearly 230 travel destinations.

The index sees real-time updates throughout the year, as and when any visa policy change happens.
