India economy & business news in brief for May 12: India-EU trade, tech body meet in Brussels on May 16

The first ministerial meeting of the India-EU Trade and Technology Council will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on May 16 that is expected to deliberate on cooperation in areas critical technologies like artificial intelligence, quantum computing and semiconductors. The meeting will be co-chaired on the Indian side by external affairs minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal and communications and information technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, according to the ministry of external affairs.

To ensure that there is no congestion at major airports, India’s civil aviation ministry on Friday asked airport operators to carry out a thorough internal analysis of their throughput and space requirements in order to boost infrastructure for hassle-free travel, according to sources, PTI reported. The issues related to congestion at airports during peak travel periods and measures required to be put in place were discussed during a meeting civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia held with airport and airline operators in the national capital.

The Adani Group-owned Ambuja Cements Ltd on Friday said it would expand its blended cement production capacity by 14 million metric tonnes, as part of a previously announced plan to double capacity in five years’ time, Reuters reported. Ambuja placed orders to expand clinker capacity by eight million tonnes at two units that would operate on green power or renewable energy, and help raise production of blended green cement by 14 million tonnes, it said in a stock exchange filing.

GBS Technology Services, a global visa outsourcing company has partnered with Global Visa Centre World, the exclusive External Service Provider to the Greek consular and diplomatic authorities to roll out new and spacious visa application centres for travellers to Greece from India, ANI/BusinessWire India reported. The launch of the first centre took place in Delhi on Thursday (11), in the presence of eminent dignitaries from the diplomatic community and tourism services.

Indian finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday underlined the need for strengthening multilateral development banks (MDBs) like the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank to address trans-boundary challenges, PTI reported. “During the session on ‘Strengthening International Cooperation for Sustainable & Inclusive Growth’, FM Smt. @nsitharaman appreciated the strong cooperation between #G20India & #JapanG7 Presidencies in challenging times to facilitate complementarity of efforts & outcomes,” a finance ministry tweet said.
