India economy & business news in brief for Jan 9: Kerala minister holds talks with Tonino Lamborghini on setting up car plant in state

The government of the southern Indian state of Kerala has held talks with Italian business tycoon Tonino Lamborghini on the possibility of setting up a vehicle manufacturing plant there, PTI reported. Tonino, son of Ferruccio Lamborghini, the founder of the world famous car company Lamborghini, was in Kerala on a private trip and held discussions with the state’s industries minister Rajeev during a meeting in Kochi on Saturday (7). Rajeev, in a Facebook post, said the luxury brand has a lot of potential in a state like Kerala, where the purchasing capacity is very high. The minister said that they held discussions over investment opportunities in areas such as convention centres, luxury hotels, flats, and condominiums.

Leading drone manufacturing company Garuda Aerospace has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Rallis India, a leading player in the agriculture industry, ANI reported. Rallis will supply pesticides and crop nutrients to Garuda Aerospace for a pilot demonstration and spraying of pesticides on fields through drones mainly in the states of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Garuda Aerospace and Rallis India, a subsidiary of Tata Chemicals, are coming together to work for the betterment of the farmers by leveraging technology in their agricultural operations, the drone maker said in a statement.

The first meeting of the Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI) Working Group of G20 under the Finance Track of India’s G20 presidency began in Kolkata in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal with a symposium through an engaging session on the role of digital public infrastructure to augment digital financial services, ANI reported. The State Bank of India, GTX, UIDAI and Nabard, among others, took part in the symposium highlighting India’s digital innovations for advancing financial inclusion. Delegates of G20 visited the stalls in the symposium and discussed digital innovations and steps that showcased innovations of digital inclusion of the masses on Monday.

Ocugen Inc., Bharat Biotech’s partner for US and Canada for Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin (BBV152) on Monday said it got positive results from the Phase 2/3, observer-blind, immuno-bridging and broadening study of the jab in US, PTI reported. A press release from the US biopharmaceutical company said the study enrolled 419 US adult participants that were randomized 1:1 to receive two doses of Covaxin or placebo, 28 days apart. “The successful completion of this study represents an important milestone to the ongoing management of COVID-19. Given that a portion of the public remains hesitant to receive mRNA vaccines, this investigational COVID-19 vaccine candidate, which relies on a well-established approach to vaccine development and manufacturing, may provide an important additional vaccine option,” Shankar Musunuri, chairman and CEO of Ocugen said.
