EID-UL-ADHA, also called Bakrid, was celebrated with zeal across the world, including India, on Thursday (29). The festival, which is also called the ‘festival of sacrifice’, is one of the most significant ones in Islam.
It is fervently celebrated by the Muslim community across the world in the month of Zul Hijjah/Dhu al-Hijjah — the 12th month of the Islamic or lunar calendar.
Several thousands of devotees gathered at mosques across the country, including Delhi’s Jama Masjid which is one of the country’s biggest ones, on the day to offer namaz (prayers).
After Eid-al-Adha prayers, Muslim devotees demonstrate their obedience to Allah by sacrificing an animal, such as a cow, goat or sheep.
On the occasion, families come together to offer prayers, exchange greetings and share festive meals.
India’s Muslim political leaders such as Mehbooba Mufti, former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir and the chief of Peoples Democratic Party, also offered prayers during the day and greeted people.
Indian president Droupadi Murmu greeted people on the occasion by tweeting in Urdu, “On the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, I offer my sincere congratulations and good wishes to all my countrymen, especially Muslim brothers and sisters. Eid-ul-Adha is a festival of love and sacrifice. This festival encourages us to follow the path of sacrifice and selfless service to humanity. On this occasion, let us pledge to work to promote mutual brotherhood and harmony in society.”
