India batter Ishank Kishan set a record on Saturday (10) when he belted Bangladesh bowlers in the third and final one-day international of the ongoing series to score the fastest double century in the format. It was also the maiden international ton for the man who made his debut last year.

The southpaw came into the India line-up for the match at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong in Bangladesh to replace injured captain Rohit Sharma who played a gem of a knock in the second match on Wednesday (7) with an injured thumb but failed to give his side a series-levelling win by a whisker.

Kishan grabbed the opportunity with both hands and put his team in a commanding position to avert an embarrassing 3-0 rout.

The 24-year-old came out to bat at No.3 at the fall of the wicket of opener Shikhar Dhawan (3) when the team score was 15 and added 290 runs in 31.4 overs with batting maestro Virat Kohli who also slammed a hundred, his 72nd on the international stage which made him go past former Australia captain Ricky Ponting. It was Kohli’s first international hundred in the 50-over format after 2019 and the 44th overall in the same. The partnership saw India posting 409 for 8 in 50 overs.

Kishan slammed his first hundred in just 85 balls and then raised the gears to hit the second in just 41 balls. His knock consisted of 23 boundaries and nine sixes.

He eventually fell in the 36th over off the bowling of speedster Taskin Ahmed on the score of 210 in only 133 balls. He broke the record of West Indies batter Chris Gayle who had slammed a double ton against Zimbabwe in the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand off just 138 deliveries.

Only Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Rohit have hit double hundreds for India in the 50-over format.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh captain Litton Das won the toss and sent the visitors, captained in the match by KL Rahul, who is also the team’s wicket-keeper, to bat first.

India lost the first two matches of the series held at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur by one wicket and five runs, respectively, to squander their second successive 50-over series in Bangladesh after 2015.
