India at Tokyo: Sindhu, Deepika, Pooja make team proud on Day 6

INDIA had a mixed sixth day (28) at the Tokyo Olympics with their contenders making progress in a number of disciplines.

In badminton, PV Sindhu had a dominating 21-9, 21-16 win over Hong Kong’s Cheung Nagan Yi in the final group stage game. Sindhu won both his group games to enter the last 16 where she will take on Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt next. In the men’s section, 13th seed B Sai Praneeth lost 14-21 14-21 to Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands to face his second loss in Group D to bow out of the tournament.

In archery, Olympic debutant Pravin Jadhav beat Russia’s Galsan Bazarzhapov, world No.2, in the first round of men’s individual 1/32 eliminations, but lost to world No.1 Brady Ellison of the US 0-6 in the round of 32. Ace woman archer Deepika Kumari also had a couple of victories during the day. She beat Bhutan’s Karma 6-0 in women’s individual 1/32 eliminations and the US’s Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez 6-4 in the 1/16 eliminations.

In boxing, Pooja Rani beat Algeria’s Ichrak Chaib 5-0 to make the quarter-finals of the women’s middle (69-75 kilograms).

Tokyo Olympics: Hockey, boxing India’s saving grace on Day 5

In hockey, the Indian women’s team met their third successive loss in Pool A as defending champions Great Britain trounced them 4-1 and with this defeat, India’s chances of making the knockouts became dim.

In rowing, India’s men’s lightweight double sculls team featuring Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh failed to qualify for the medal final.

In sailing (men’s skiff — 49er), Ganapathy Kelapanda and Varun Thakkar finished 18th in Race 02, 17th in Race 03 and 19th in Race 04.
