In India’s Rajasthan, father of teen who was gangraped, burnt in coal furnace, tries to jump onto her pyre

Partially burnt body parts, suspected to be of the victim, were found from a pond in the village following a search operation, the police said.

IN a heart-wrenching incident, the father of a 14-year-old girl in Bhilwara in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan tried to jump onto the burning pyre of his daughter who was allegedly gangraped and killed. He was saved but got injured and was recovering in a local hospital.

Seven people have so far been arrested in connection to the case which saw discovery of charred remains of the minor at a coal furnace after she went missing on August 2.

A police officer from Bhilwara’s Kotra police station was suspended for alleged negligence in the case.

The teenager was allegedly murdered and burnt at the furnace in a village of Bhilwara district. Local people alleged that she was gangraped.

On Friday (4), partially burnt body parts, suspected to be of the girl, were found from a pond in the village following a search operation, the police said, according to India Today.

A protest also broke out in the area over the heinous crime.

The girl reportedly went missing after she had gone out to graze cattle. The crime was reportedly committed the same night. The police said some of the minor’s body parts were allegedly burnt while some others were disposed of in the pond in a bid to erase evidence.

Bhilwara superintendent of police Adarsh Sidhu called the case “rarest of the rare” and added all efforts will be made to ensure that the guilty get death penalty.

He said 10 people were accused in the case, including four women.

‘Cannot be accepted in civilised society’

Sachin Pilot, a member of Rajasthan’s ruling Indian National Congress and the state’s former deputy chief minister, on Tuesday visited Bhilwara and said the brutality with which the minor girl was treated cannot be accepted in any civilised society.

“The incident that was carried out and the brutality with which a minor girl was raped and murdered, cannot be accepted in any civilised society. The people who carried out this incident have crossed the limits of humanity. Those who had committed this heinous crime have crossed the limits of humanity,” Pilot told reporters, according to Asian News International.

The 45-year-old leader also met the victim’s kin and spoke to the local police to seek an update on the investigation.

“I’ve met the relatives of the victim and got to know that all the accused have been arrested and the police are also going to detain the two minors…The administration has informed me that the court will conduct hearings daily and charge POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act) case and take strict actions against them, ” he added.

On Sunday (6), a four-member committee of women parliamentarians of the state’s opposition Bharatiya Janata Party met the girl’s family.
