A HIGH-RANKED police officer in the northern Indian state of Haryana was on Tuesday (19) killed by a mining mafia after he had gone to conduct a raid on receiving a tip-off about alleged illegal mining.
Surendra Singh, the deputy superintendent of police of Tauru in the Nuh district of Haryana, was run over a truck and died on the spot. His body was later found in an open dumpster.
According to an eyewitness, Singh, 59, was standing near his official vehicle when he asked the driver of the truck, allegedly carrying illicit quarrying equipment, to stop. The driver did not oblige and crushed the police official under his heavy vehicle.
The driver was on the run and the state police launched a manhunt to catch him.

Anil Vij, the home minister of the state which is ruled by prime minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said strictest action will be taken against the guilty. He also announced a compensation of Rs 50 lakh (£52,076) for the family of Singh.
“We will not spare anyone. Strict actions will be taken against the accused. Rs 50 lakhs is given to police personnel from the bank and the government will also give Rs 50 lakhs to the family of the deceased DSP,” Vij said on Tuesday.
Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced Rs one crore (£104,152) assistance and a job to the next of the kin of the officer, the Press Trust of India reported. “In the murder case of Tauru DSP Surendra Singh, orders have been given to take strict action. Not a single culprit will be spared,” he also said in a tweet in Hindi.
The state police condoled Singh’s death and said the guilty would be brought to justice.
The opposition Indian National Congress slammed the state government saying the law-and-order situation in the state had deteriorated under the BJP’s rule.
“ML Khattar, what did you turn our state into? Neither MLAs are safe here, nor the police. What will happen to the general public? It’s very sad news. May his soul rest in peace and we pray that his family get justice soon,” the Haryana Congress tweeted.
