SEVEN people were arrested after a group of local people allegedly told a 16-year-old Dalit girl not to attend school on the ground that other girls were also not studying. A major brawl took place between the family of the teen and the accused after this. The shocking incident happened in Bawaliyakhedi village in Shajapur district of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

According to police sources that confirmed the incident, seven were arrested in connection with the incident that took place on Saturday (23). They added that some people were injured after the clash broke out between the girl’s family members and the accused.

It was learnt that the girl allegedly harassed posted a video in which she alleged that the accused snatched her school bag and objected to her attending classes. She also alleged that her brother was assaulted by the accused when he resisted their instructions.

The girl, who belongs to a community which is ranked low in India’s complex social spectrum, was on her way home from a local school when the local people confronted her, a local police officer Avdesh Kumar Shesha said on Tuesday (26) quoting a complaint.

After a complaint was raised, the police arrested seven people on Monday (25) under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, Shesha said.

A counter complaint by the other side, alleging assault, was also registered against the girl’s brother and three others, he said.

Those injured in the clash were being treated in the district hospital, the official said but did not give their exact number.

India just saw the conclusion of term of a Dalit president and beginning of that of a tribal president.
