IIT graduates face placement slump: Report

Out of 23 Indian Institutes of Technology in the country, 22 have seen a drop in placements for BTech students in 2023-24, when compared with 2021-22

THE PLACEMENT rates of graduates from India’s premier technology institutes have fallen in three years, according to the union government.

The data submitted by the central government to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education states that 22 of the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have seen a drop in placements for BTech students in 2023-24, when compared with 2021-22, according to Indian Express.

In half of the IITs the drop is more than 10 percentage points during the above mentioned period.

The sharpest fall was at IIT-Dharwad, where the rate fell from 90.2 per cent in 2021-’22 to 65.56 per cent in 2023-’24, a decline of 24.64 percentage points, followed by IIT Jammu (from 92 per cent to 70 per cent).

Among older IITs, the highest drop in placements was in Delhi (14.88 percentage points), followed by Bombay (12.72 percentage points), Madras (12.42 percentage points) and Kanpur (11.15 percentage points).

India’s oldest IIT (Kharagpur) saw a marginal drop of 2.88 percentage points in placements.

The other IITs where the placements dropped over 10 percentage points include Guwahati, Roorkee, Dhanbad, Hyderabad, Ropar, Indore, Mandi, Palakkad and Bhilai.

IIT (BHU) Varanasi bucked the trend by improving its placements of B Tech graduates from 83.15 per cent in 2021-22 to 88,04 per cent in 2023-24.

The committee resport also pointed a similar trend in National Institutes of Technology, the corresponding data was not included.

The has also been a decline in the average financial package secured by each student.

The committee also called for finding ways to “enhance employability.”
