INDIA was left shocked on Wednesday (27) after CCTV footage emerging from the central state of Madhya Pradesh showed a pre-teen girl, semi-naked and bleeding after being raped, going from door to door asking for help but failing to get any.
One man was even seen shooing her away as she approached him for a helping hand.
The footage was from a security camera at Badnagar Road, about 15 kilometres from Ujjain, a Hindu temple town which is around 192 kilometres from state capital Bhopal.
The 12-year-old girl, wandering the streets in a rag that barely covered her modesty, was eventually helped by a priest at an ashram who covered her with a cloth and took her to a nearby hospital. There, it was confirmed that she was raped, NDTV reported.
But the girl had to be rushed to Indore, about 55 kilometres away, as her injuries were serious and she needed to be given blood. Police personnel came forward to her aid and her condition was learnt to be stable.
According to the NDTV report, the minor could not give a coherent reply when the police asked her name and address.
A case of rape was registered against unidentified accused. The POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, which calls for stringent punishment, was also provoked.
The Ujjain Police formed a special team to catch the culprits and urged the public to cooperate if they have any information.
The police were also trying to locate the place where the crime took place.
The incident brought to the fore the dismal record of women’s security in Madhya Pradesh, a state which is ruled by prime minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party and will go to polls in a few months.
As per India’s National Crime Records Bureau, Madhya Pradesh reported most cases of rape in the country in 2021. More than half of them were crimes against minors. In terms of numbers, 18 rapes were registered in the state every day.
