EFFECTS of the communal clash that started on Monday (31) in Nuh district of the northern Indian state of Haryana has now reached sector 70 of Gurugram, one of the country’s financial and technological hubs, and less than 20 kilometres away from the national capital New Delhi.
Authorities imposed prohibitory orders in Gurugram following sporadic incidents of violence on Tuesday (1), NDTV reported. Several shops and shanties in residential areas were set on fire. A ban was imposed on the sale of loose petrol or diesel to avoid incidents of arson.
Police in Gurugram told the Indian news channel that while there have been incidents of arson and skirmishes on Tuesday, there was no major untoward incident.
The law-keepers also appealed to citizens not to believe rumours and reports on social media. They also said that reports being circulated on social media about schools, colleges and work stations being shut because of the disturbance are false.
“Messages being circulated on social media about schools, colleges, work stations being closed today are false. All traffic is running as usual, there are no restrictions,” Varun Kumar Dahiya, assistant commissioner of police -Gurugram, was quoted as saying by NDTV.
The violence started on Monday reportedly over some objectionable video that went viral on social media. A mob was accused of targeting a religious procession taken out by a Hindu right-wing outfit, fuelling the trouble. The situation turned so tense that more than 2,000 people who took part in the religious event took shelter in a nearby temple. Several vehicles, including those of the police, were either damaged or set on fire.
The violence escalated as the day progressed and a mosque was set on fire post midnight.
Six deaths have been confirmed in the violence so far, Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar said. He also appealed to people to maintain peace and added that more than 115 people were arrested in connection with the violence in Nuh on Monday.
