Overspeeding Jaguar rams into crowd standing at an accident spot in Gujarat; 9 killed

A video footage, which was doing rounds on social media, showed a white Jaguar with a speed in excess of 100 kilometres per hour, hitting the crowd, flinging people into the air.

A SPEEDING luxury car ploughed through a curious crowd which gathered at an accident site late in the night on a highway in the western Indian state of Gujarat, killing at least nine people.

A video of the accident was recorded by a motorcyclist who was standing on the opposite side of the road.

The footage, which was doing rounds on social media, showed a white Jaguar with a speed in excess of 100 kilometres per hour, hitting the crowd, tossing people into the air. There was no light at the spot where the car rammed into the people.

According to one report, the bystanders gathered around 1 am at the ISKCON bridge on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway in Ahmedabad after an Indian-made SUV collided with a truck. The crowd included two policemen, a constable and a home guard officer who had come to the spot to control the traffic, a PTI report said.

Both the policemen were killed after being hit by the car.

One of the bystanders named Altamash Qureshi told PTI that the car was going at an extremely high speed. The driver of the Jaguar, identified as Tathya Patel, was also injured in the accident and admitted to a hospital, a police officer told PTI.

The car was also badly damaged.

Neeta Desai, a top traffic police officer, told the agency that a first information report was registered. She said 10 to 11 people were also injured in the accident and that the case did not seem to be one of drunk driving. She added that the vehicle was going at an extremely high speed and the driver would be arrested once the doctors give the go-ahead.

Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel condoled the deaths and announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the family of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
