Google has cut 10 per cent of top-level jobs to increase efficiency: Sundar Pichai

GOOGLE CEO Sundar Pichai has said that it has slashed 10 per cent of its top management roles as part of its ongoing push to increase efficiency amid competition from AI-based rivals like OpenAI and others, Business Insider reports.

At an all-hands meeting on Wednesday (18), Pichai told employees that over a couple of years the efficiency push has included 10 per cent reduction in managers, directors and vice-presidents. While some roles were changed to non-managerial positions, others were eliminated.

Alphabet Inc-owned Google launched its efficiency drive in September 2022. In January, 2023, the search engine giant eliminated 12,000 roles, roughly 6 per cent of the workforce.

Pichai said the eliminations were done after a rigorous efficiency audit across the company that included reviewing product areas, functions, levels and regions across Alphabet.

To counter competition from AI-based rivals, Google has introduced generative-AI features to its core businesses and innovative tools like AI video generator and a new set of Gemini models.
