Glasgow Airport was on Monday (5) shut down by emergency services following reports of a “suspicious package” being found in a passenger’s bag.
According to a report by STV News, police were given a call around 5.55 am local time during the day with the Scotland-based international airport’s central search area locked down.
Two fire crews were sent to the scene around 6 am, STV News cited a spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service as saying.
The airport authorities confirmed that the trial was “currently restricted” while checks were being carried out, the report added. They also warned passengers that departing flights would be delayed.
Evacuation was also carried out around 8.45 am with the passengers asked to move into the multi-level parking structure, the report added.
The travellers were upset as the evacuation reportedly caused chaos in the parking area. They said that they were given water and foil blankets in cold conditions but not informed about the details except the fact that it is a ‘police incident’, the report added.
People were reportedly not panicking but were confused and annoyed, it was learnt. They also went to a nearby hotel.
The check-in and security hall areas were closed for the public, a Police Scotland spokesperson said.
