NINETEEN PEOPLE were reportedly injured following a gas leak at a plant of Tata Steel in Dhenkanal in the eastern Indian state of Odisha on Tuesday (13). The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital. The incident happened at the time of an inspection.
Confirming the incident, the company said in a statement, “We are saddened to report an accident at the BFPP2 power plant due to escape of steam at Tata Steel Meramandali Works in Dhenkanal, Odisha.”

The incident happened at the blast furnace power plant of Tata Steel.
The plant’s premises were cordoned off and emergency services were pressed into action, the company added. It said an internal investigation had been launched.

According to Tata Steel, the accident took place around 1 pm local time when the inspection work was going on and affected some people who were working at the site and immediately shifted to the occupational health centre inside the plant premises. They were then shifted to Cuttack, located around 44 kilometres away, in the company’s ambulance, accompanied by doctors and paramedics.
Tata Steel said it was in contact with the families of the affected people and would provide them support.
“We are working closely with relevant authorities on ground and have initiated an internal investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident. Safety remains our top priority and we’re committed to learning from this incident. We will share updates as and when more details are available,” Tata Steel said, NDTV reported.
