FRESH VIOLENCE erupted in the north-eastern Indian state of Manipur late on Tuesday (13), resulting in deaths of at least nine people and injury to five.

According to reports, firing took place in the state’s Khamenlok area, along the borders of the Imphal East district dominated by the Meitei community and the Kangpokpi district which is a tribal-dominated area.

The injured were shifted to a hospital for treatment.

India Today cited sources who said miscreants set several houses in Khamenlok village on fire.

Local police told PTI that militants carrying sophisticated weapons surrounded villagers of Khamenlok bordering Imphal East and Kangpokpi district and launched the attack.

On Monday (12), nine people were injured in a gunfight in Khamenlok area as militants exchanged fire with village volunteers.

Security personnel also exchanged fire with Kuki militants in Bishnupur district of Manipur on Tuesday.

At least 100 people have lost their lives while more than 300 have been injured in ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur that started early May. Army and paramilitary forces were deployed to restore peace in the area. Home minister Amit Shah visited the state earlier this month and appealed for peace and surrender of arms. Several arms were also surrendered, according to reports.

Meanwhile, India’s opposition Indian National Congress and a section of the academics questioned prime minister Narendra Modi for allegedly remaining silent over the violence.
