THE West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) on Thursday cancelled the registration of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s former principal Sandip Ghosh, an official said.

Ghosh, who is in CBI custody, has been removed from the list of Registered Medical Practitioners maintained by the WBMC, he said.

His licence was cancelled under various provisions of the Bengal Medical Act of 1914, the official said.

He is an orthopaedic surgeon and without the licence, he cannot practice.

Ghosh was arrested by the CBI on September 2 for his alleged involvement in the financial irregularities at the hospital amid the protests over the rape and murder of the on-duty trainee doctor.

He was later accused of evidence tampering in the rape-murder case.

Aniket Mahato, one of the leading faces of the junior doctors who have been agitating over the death of their colleague, described it as a “victory”.

“This is a victory for our deceased sister. The cancellation of Ghosh’s medical registration should have been done the very next day of his arrest. We are happy that the West Bengal Medical Council has finally taken this step,” he said.

Ghosh was appointed the principal of the RG Kar Medical College in February 2021. Amid the protests, he resigned from the post.

IMA demand

The Bengal chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) had on Tuesday written to the WBMC urging it to cancel Ghosh’s registration.

The letter was written by the state president of the IMA Bengal unit Dilip Kumar and former national president Santanu Sen.

Following Ghosh’s arrest by the CBI, the WBMC had on September 7 issued a show-cause notice to him asking him to reply within three days on why his medical registration should not be cancelled.

There has been no response from Ghosh, who is now in CBI custody following his arrest in the rape-murder case, the sources said.

Police chief visits hospital

Newly-appointed Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma on Thursday visited RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Accompanied by Dipak Sarkar, who has replaced Abhishek Gupta as Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Division), Verma stayed at the hospital premises for over 30 minutes where he visited the scene of crime on the second floor of the Emergency block and met hospital authorities at the administrative building.

Verma is scheduled to hold a meeting with the Kolkata Police’s top brass at the force’s headquarters at Lalbazar later in the day where he is expected to address issues of law and order that are likely to prevail in the days ahead in the context of the ongoing RG Kar protests and management of the upcoming Durga Puja festival.

Verma replaced Vineet Goyal as Kolkata Police Commissioner on Tuesday in the wake of an agreement reached between chief minister Mamata Banerjee and the protesting junior doctors. (PTI)
