Foreign minister Jaishankar pays tribute to Indian soldiers at Tanzania war memorial

Arriving in Tanzania after visiting Zanzibar, the diplomat aimed to strengthen the bilateral relations between India and Tanzania.

INDIAN external affairs minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Friday (7) paid tribute to Indian soldiers cremated at the Commonwealth War Memorial in Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania where he has gone for a four-day visit.

Arriving in Tanzania after visiting Zanzibar for two days, the diplomat aimed to strengthen the bilateral relations between India and Tanzania, which have traditionally been close and friendly.

In a tweet, Jaishankar highlighted the importance of the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers in various theaters of war, emphasising their role in India’s global impact.

“Paid homage to Indian soldiers at the Commonwealth War Memorial in Dar es Salaam today. Their sacrifices in various theatres of war are an important aspect of our history. They are a reminder of India’s global impact,” he wrote along with posting pictures.

The Commonwealth War Memorial, located within the Dar es Salaam War Cemetery, commemorates over 1,500 officers and men who lost their lives in East Africa during and after January 1917, when the first world war was underway. The cemetery also features the Dar Es Salaam Hindu cremation memorial, dedicated to 14 Indian servicemen whose remains were cremated according to their faith.

During his visit, Jaishankar also met with members of the India-Tanzania Parliamentary Friendship Group, expressing his appreciation for their desire to strengthen parliamentary, economic, and people-to-people ties with India. He expressed confidence in the growth of strong and historic relations between the two parliamentary democracies.

“Began the morning by meeting with members of the India-Tanzania Parliamentary Friendship Group. Appreciate their warm sentiments for stronger parliamentary, political, economic and people-to-people ties with India. Confident that the strong and historic ties between our two parliamentary democracies will keep growing,” Jaishankar tweeted along with pictures.
