A FIREFIGHT started on Monday (23) between unidentified gunmen, western security forces and Afghan guards at the Kabul airport, sources in the German Army said, as thousands of Afghans and foreigners rushed to the airport to flee the Taliban rule that resumed in the war-torn nation after almost 20 years.
One Afghan guard was reportedly killed while three were injured in the fighting that took place at the airport’s north gate, the German armed forces said on Twitter.
While the Taliban have tried to enforce order outside the airport, Afghan guards are stationed inside the airport to help the American forces.
According to a report by CNN, a sniper outside the airport in the Afghan capital had fired back at Afghan guards inside the facility. It was said that while the guards fired back, the US forces fired back at the guards, creating a commotion.
Two officials of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) at the airport later said the situation was under control and all airport gates had been shut.
The Kabul airport has seen a complete chaos since the extremist group recaptured power on August 15, hours after president Ashraf Ghani fled Kabul, as American and international forces try to evacuate common people from Afghanistan.
People were also seen clinging onto military planes taking off from the airport in a desperate bid to flee. Some even slipped and fell on terraces of nearby houses to die.
