WHILE India and Pakistan ties have become frosty after the terror attack at Pahalgam, US president Donald Trump appears cool and optimistic about their resolution and claimed the two countries have been at loggerheads for over 1,000 years.
The US president remarked that there have always been tensions between the two countries and Kashmir dispute is more than “1,000 years old”.
“I am very close to India and I’m very close to Pakistan, as you know. And they’ve had that fight for 1,000 years in Kashmir. Kashmir has been going on for 1,000 years, probably longer than that.
“And it was a bad one yesterday, though, that was a bad one. Over 30 people,” Trump said during a press gaggle with reporters aboard Air Force One on the way to Rome on Friday (25).
There have been “tensions on that border for 1,500 years. So you know, the same as it’s been, but they’ll get it figured out one way or the other. I’m sure… I know both leaders. There is great tension between Pakistan and India. But there always has been”, he said.

Twenty-six people were killed on Tuesday (22) when terrorists opened fire at an open meadow at Baisaran in Pahalgam.
Most of those killed were tourists who had come from various parts of India to escape the sweltering heat.
The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba claimed responsibility for the attack.
Indian security agencies claimed the terrorists were trained in Pakistan, and as punitive measure the Narendra Modi government suspended the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) and downgraded diplomatic ties with Islamabad.
In response, Pakistan threatened to suspend the Simla Agreement and put other bilateral accords with India on hold.
It also closed its airspace for Indian airlines and suspended all trade.
Islamabad also closed the Wagah border post, cancelled visas given to Indians under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme. (PTI)
