Fifteen people were killed after a bus collided with a lorry in Rewa district of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh on Friday (21) night while at least 40 were injured.
The ill-fated bus, which had about 100 people on board, was headed for Gorakhpur in the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh from Hyderabad in the southern state of Telangana. It rammed into the lorry at Suhagi Pafadi area in Rewa between 10.30 pm and 11 pm local time.
Local police superintendent Navneet Bhasin said most of the passengers of the bus were residents of Uttar Pradesh and going home for Diwali celebrations.

“Of the 40 injured, 25 have been admitted to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Rewa where one person succumbed to his injuries. The death toll has increased to 15,” Bhasin told Asian News International.
Rewa district collector Manoj Pushp said it seemed the lorry had already hit another heavy vehicle in front of it and when its driver applied brakes, the bus which was coming from behind, hit it.
He said rescue operations started soon after the accident and the injured were being treated in hospital. Police and administrative personnel were present on the site to oversee the rescue efforts that concluded on Friday night.
Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan condoled the deaths and spoke to his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath over phone on Saturday (22) morning and apprised him of the accident, the former’s office said.

“The mortal remains of the passengers who died in the accident are still being kept in the morgue. Along with this, the people who are safe or less injured have been sent to Prayagraj through two buses at night after giving them first aid. Those passengers who are seriously injured are being treated free of cost at Rewa Medical College. Rewa district administration is ensuring all necessary arrangements for the rituals of the injured and the dead, including treatment,” the Madhya Pradesh chief minister’s office said in a statement.
Adityanath also expressed grief over the deaths and announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to critically injured.
Om Birla, the speaker of the Lok Sabha or Lower House of the Indian parliament also expressed grief over the tragedy.
Ashok Gehlot, the chief minister of the western state of Rajasthan, also condoled the deaths.
