Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi vacated his official residence in Delhi on Saturday (22), the last day of the deadline following his disqualification as a member of the Lok Sabha or Lower House of the Indian Parliament, NDTV reported.
Rahul, who represented the Wayanad constituency in the southern state of Kerala since 2019, visited the bungalow in central Delhi twice in the morning along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a top post holder of the Congress party.
On Friday (21), Gandhi, 52, moved out all his belongings from his official residence, PTI reported.
The former president of the grand-old party was asked to vacate the premises by April 22 following his disqualification after he was convicted in a defamation case by a court in the western state of Gujarat. He was also given a two-year sentence.
Last week, Gandhi shifted his office and some personal belongings from the bungalow to the official residence of his mother Sonia Gandhi, who is also a member of the Lok Sabha.
Source said the Congress leader moved out his remaining belongings on Friday evening from the bungalow which was allotted to him as a parliamentarian. A transport vehicle was seen moving out of the building.
Gandhi served as a member of the parliament since 2004 when he was first elected from Amethi in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. He also won the 2009 and 2014 elections from there before losing to Bharatiiya Janata Party’s Smriti Irani in 2019.
He also contested from Wayanad the same year and won from there.
Gandhi challenged the court order against him in Surat in Gujarat but his appeal to set aside the conviction was rejected. The party has said that the order will be challenged in the high court of Gujarat next week.
